Medicare FAQ

When can I enroll?
  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): 7 months around your 65th birthday (3 before, birthday month, 3 after).
  • General Enrollment: Jan 1–Mar 31 each year if you missed Part B; coverage usually starts the month after you enroll.
  • Annual Election (AEP): Oct 15–Dec 7 to change Part D or Medicare Advantage for Jan 1 start.
  • Open Enrollment (MA OEP): Jan 1–Mar 31 to switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan once.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): Life events like moving, losing employer coverage, Extra Help, etc.
What does Part A cover?
Inpatient hospital, limited skilled nursing facility, home health, and hospice. Deductible and per-period cost sharing apply.
What does Part B cover?
Doctor visits, outpatient surgery, labs, imaging, durable medical equipment, many preventive services. Monthly premium and annual deductible; most services are 20% coinsurance after the deductible.
How do Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans work?
Private plans that replace Original Medicare. You still pay Part B, but services run through the plan. Copays and networks vary. Many include Part D and extras (dental, vision, hearing, OTC allowances, fitness).
How do Part D drug plans work?
Stand-alone plans with their own formularies and pharmacy networks. Premiums and copays vary widely by ZIP and Rx list. We’ll check your medications to avoid surprises.
Do I need a Medigap plan?
Medigap (Supplement) helps pay Part A/B deductibles and coinsurance with Original Medicare. No networks. Doesn’t include Part D. Best during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment when underwriting is waived.
