1 What’s the difference between Term Life, Whole Life, and Final Expense?

TERM LIFE is temporary, basic life insurance (10–40 years) and usually the lowest cost per $1 of coverage - great for income and mortgage protection. WHOLE LIFE lasts for life, builds cash value, and has guaranteed level premiums, for life. FINAL EXPENSE is simply a small Whole Life ($2,000–$50,000) focused on funeral and last bills - easier underwriting, no exam needed, no needles nor urine tests.

2 Can I get Day-1 coverage (no waiting period)?

Most of our clients qualify and get approved for immediate Day-1 coverage. Certain conditions may require a graded period. We compare carriers to place you where Day-1 is possible. If health questions are a hurdle, Guaranteed Issue asks no health questions (often with a graded start).

3 Will my premium ever go up or my coverage go down?

Final Expense Whole Life premiums are level for life and coverage does not decrease.

In comparison, Term premiums only stay level during the selected period (10–30 years). After the term, continuing coverage becomes very expensive. That’s by design; new needs after the term usually require a new policy.

For final expenses, you want coverage that never expires, with fixed premiums for life. Locking in earlier keeps the price lower forever.

4 How much coverage do most people choose for final expenses?

Common amounts are $10,000–$20,000. Cremation can be a few thousand; a traditional funeral often runs higher. Many pick enough for the service plus a cushion for family needs.

5 Do I need a medical exam?

Usually no exam. Carriers may review prescription history, MIB, and a short phone interview. Guaranteed Issue asks no health questions at all (commonly with a graded period).

6 What health issues can still be approved?

We routinely place approvals with diabetes (with/without insulin), COPD, heart history, prior cancer, controlled mental health, and more. If traditional questions are a hurdle, Guaranteed Issue accepts most people within age limits.

7 How fast are claims paid?

Once the carrier has the claim and required documents, payouts are often issued in 2–4 business days. Benefits go directly to your named beneficiary unless you assign them to a funeral home.

8 Who should I list as beneficiary? Can I have more than one?

Name anyone you trust - child, spouse, relative, friend, church, or charity. You can list multiple beneficiaries and set percentages. Keep them updated after life changes to avoid delays or probate.

9 Will life insurance benefits be taxed?

Death benefits are generally income-tax free to beneficiaries. Interest credited after death may be taxable. Policy loans from cash value are typically not taxed if the policy stays in force and doesn’t become a MEC; large loans should be reviewed with your agent/tax pro.

10 Does life insurance affect Medicaid/SSI?

Small cash values may count as an asset for Medicaid/SSI resource tests. Final Expense face amounts don’t count as income. State thresholds vary - coordinate policy design with your agent and, if needed, an elder-law professional.

11 What’s cash value and can I use it while alive?

Whole Life builds cash value over time. You can access it via loans or withdrawals. Loans are typically tax-advantaged if the policy stays in force and isn’t a MEC; outstanding loans reduce the death benefit.

12 Which riders should I consider?
  • Accelerated/Living Benefits: Access part of the death benefit for qualifying critical/chronic/terminal illness.
  • Accidental Death Benefit: Extra payout if death is accidental.
  • Child/Grandchild Rider: Small, affordable coverage for dependents.
  • Waiver of Premium: Waives premiums in specific disability cases (varies).
  • Return of Premium (Term): Get base premiums back if you outlive the term; costs more.
13 I have an old policy. Replace it or keep it?

Don’t cancel before comparing. Consider age/health, any new waiting period, cash value/surrender charges, riders, and claims history. Often it’s better to keep the old policy and add a small Final Expense plan; we’ll run the math.

14 What’s the two-year contestability or suicide clause?

During the first two years (varies by state), carriers can investigate material misstatements. Most policies include a suicide limitation (often two years). After those periods, benefits are typically fully payable per policy terms.

15 What happens if I miss a payment?

There’s usually a grace period (about 31 days). If the policy lapses, many carriers allow reinstatement with back premiums and updated health info. We’ll help you reinstate or replace if needed.

16 Is smoking/vaping rated the same?

Definitions vary by carrier. Cigarettes are typically “tobacco” rates. Some carriers treat cigars, nicotine pouches, or vaping differently. Honesty matters - misclassification can void coverage. We’ll place you with a carrier most favorable to your usage profile.

17 Will my policy keep up with inflation?

Final Expense face amounts are level - for LIFE. Some policies offer options to increase coverage later. A practical approach: buy enough now, then add a small policy later if needs rise.

18 Can I assign my policy to a funeral home?

Yes - through a funeral assignment. Your beneficiary can also coordinate with the funeral home so funds arrive promptly. We’ll help your family with claims and paperwork if needed.

19 How do living benefits actually pay while I’m alive?

With eligible riders, the insurer advances a portion of your death benefit after a qualifying event (certain critical, chronic, or terminal illnesses). That money can cover bills, treatment travel, or caregiving. We’ll show side-by-side options.

20 Will moving to another state affect my policy?

Your existing policy remains in force nationwide. New applications or rider changes depend on current state rules. If you move, tell us so we can align billing and notices.

21 What’s Guaranteed Issue - and who should consider it?

Guaranteed Issue Whole Life (GIWL) plans will ask no health questions and approve all applicants within eligible ages. It commonly includes a graded period. It’s ideal when significant health history makes you uninsurable with most companies. Ask your agent if you can still qualify for immediate benefit, no waiting period. Some group Guaranteed Issue plans have no waiting period - if you qualify.

22 Can I cover my kids or grandkids?

Yes - either via a child rider on your policy (very affordable) or a permanent policy in the child’s name for lifetime coverage and future insurability. Many families use small policies as a savings discipline.

23 Term Life with Return of Premium - worth it?

It costs more than level term, but if you outlive the term, you can receive up to 100% of base premiums back. Good for disciplined savers who want a built-in refund feature. We’ll compare the math vs. standard term and WL/Final Expense.

24 How do I avoid overpaying?
  • Use an independent broker (we quote multiple A-rated carriers).
  • Lock in while you’re younger/healthier.
  • Right-size your benefit now; add later if needed.
  • Keep beneficiary info updated to avoid claim delays.
25 What should I have handy for our call to speed things up?

Basic info (address, DOB, recent prescriptions if handy). Any existing policy statements. Your comfortable monthly budget and beneficiary details. With that, we can often get a decision on the same call.
